Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher. – William Wordsworth
In March of 1880 Mormon emigrants traveled around the north end of Grand Gulch on Cedar Mesa, south of Natural Bridges National Monument in the heart of the Colorado Plateau, to avoid its endless maze of canyons thereby making the Utah Emigrant Trail. This is where your trek begins! You will walk the same path of those 220-plus people of the last major U.S. wagon train expedition (the only trail to have been routed east). You’ll make better time than they did though, for their journey from Cedar City to Bluff was reduced, on average, to less than two miles per day partly because they were tasked with bringing two babies into the world during their voyage.
The scenery encompassing Emigrant Trail will bewitch you. After trekking through Fish Creek Canyon Wilderness Area, you’ll drop into the beautiful North Fork of Road Canyon. Once in the Road Canyon Wilderness Study Area, you’ll experience the historic Mormon Emigrant Trail as it wanders through piñon-juniper forest blanketing the mesa top and past many prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan ruins in the canyon bottom.
Your first two days will be spent in the piñon-juniper forest atop the mesa. Lofty mountains and striking geologic features are visible in every direction as the trail traverses the forest and open fields of sagebrush that were named by the expedition as “flats.” On day three you descend into the North Fork of Road Canyon. The next two days keep you immersed in the awesome environment contained between the canyon walls. As you travel through, you have the opportunity to explore a rich collection of ruins, cliff dwellings, and rock art. This is an adventure of duality replete with culture new and old, landscape flat and steep, vegetation sparse and dense, and wildlife high and low. Emigrant Trail is one of a kind.
