I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order. – John Burroughs
This fully supported trip gives trekkers the opportunity to spend four days walking through one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado – With Only Their Day Packs!! Our trip begins in Durango as we travel north on the Million Dollar Highway, passing over Coal Bank Pass, Molas Pass, and Red Mountain Pass as well as through the historic towns of Silverton and Ouray. Once we ascend Owl Creek Pass, our adventure begins.
On the first day we make our way to Wetterhorn Basin, where our campsite will be already set up and waiting for us. We will spend the first two nights at this campsite–nestled beneath two 14,000’ peaks, Wetterhorn Peak (14,015’) and Uncompahgre Peak (14,309’), as well as many other 13,000’ peaks. On our second day, we ascend to the top of Uncompahgre Peak, one of Colorado’s iconic peaks. The trek up to the summit reveals spectacular views of the broadness and extent of the San Juan Mountains to the south and the Elk Mountains and Grand Mesa to the north. This panorama is extraordinary and will not be forgotten!! On day three, we make our way over the Ridge Stock Driveway Saddle Trail through alpine tundra and conifer forests where our campsite awaits us. Our fourth day follows the historic and legendary mining trail that is now known as the Bear Creek National Recreation Trail (the only National Recreation Trail in the San Juan Mountains). The Bear Creek Trail is truly a national treasure! We end the trek as our vehicle is waiting to pick us up and return us to Durango (possibly with a stop in Silverton for ice cream cones!).
