San Juans : La Garita Wilderness – Summer 2016

I follow nature as the surest guide, and resign myself with implicit obedience to her sacred ordinances. – Cicero

During this trip trekkers will journey into the high country of one of Colorado’s most wild and uncharted areas, La Garita Wilderness, which is located in two national forests, the Rio Grande National Forest and Gunnison National Forest. On day one we depart from Durango and travel over Wolf Creek Pass toward Creede. Our walking adventure begins high above Creede. After arriving at the Wheeler Geologic Area (the first national monument created in United States history, but later repealed due to its remoteness), we will spend the rest of the day exploring its geologic wonderland. Day two takes over Halfmoon Pass, as we stay high above in the alpine tundra where dazzling views surround us. We continue along the Machin Basin Trail on day three, passing glistening alpine lakes before meeting the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), a fabulous national treasure (this trail is over 3,000 miles long and runs from Mexico to Canada). Day four has us follow the CDT until sunset, when we will make our final camp for the trip. On the fifth day, which is the last but certainly not the least, we hike up San Luis Peak, one of Colorado’s reveled 14,000’ peaks. San Luis Peak sits at 14,014’ and offers splendid views that will be etched in your memory for a lifetime! After our descent off of San Luis Peak, we return to our vehicles and drive back to Durango.
