Let us permit nature to have her way. She understands her business better than we do. – Michel de Montaigne
In Cedar Mesa, Utah at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station you begin this trek, the longest of the five in the GGC. You’ll journey through the mesa’s piñon-juniper and sagebrush forest for a short distance, look back at the world you knew, and enter Kane Gulch. Over the next several days, we will explore cultural relics left scattered throughout the landscape by Ancestral Puebloans. This canyon provides a magnificently wild, remote backdrop for the ruins, cliff dwellings, and rock art. You will see so much that you won’t believe your eyes!
Turkey Pen Ruin, Stimper Arch, Lion Tracks Spring, The Thumb, Coyote Canyon, and Sheik’s Canyon are just some of the treasures you will encounter along the way. Totem Pole will impress you before continuing onto Step Canyon and Cow Tank Canyon. Marvel at the Big Man Panel. Pass under a natural arch before the Pollys Canyon junction. Continue to Deer Canyon, then to Bannister Ruin. When we hit Collins Canyon junction, you’ll have a chance to explore The Narrows. This trek is nothing short of spectacular. Alas, here you will have nearly run the trek’s course, and exiting Grand Gulch out of Collins Canyon you will find your transportation waiting to return you to Durango after nearly a week of glorious canyoneering.
