It’s the great, big, broad land ‘way up yonder, It’s the forests where silence has lease; It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder, It’s the stillness that fills me with peace. – Robert Service
This trek offers you the exhilarating experience of hiking three of Colorado’s majestic 14,000’ peaks in three days. All that is needed to be comfortable is your personal clothing because this trip is fully supported and provides tasty meals. Day one begins in Durango as we travel the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton via Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass. Once in Silverton we will visit the award-winning Mining Heritage Center and the nationally recognized Mayflower Mill, then travel past the ghost towns of Eureka and Animas Forks before ascending the beautiful Cinnamon Pass. We will make our camp either in American Basin or on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River and prepare for the next day’s adventure up Handies Peak (14,058’). After a hearty breakfast on day two, we begin our journey up Handies Peak. Frequently we have shared these remarkable, sweeping views with mountain goats clambering up the craggy mountainside. We will descend to our camp and rest for tomorrow’s wonderful climb up Red Cloud Peak (14,035’) and Sunshine Peak (14,006’). Day three we begin our hike up Silver Creek and summit Red Cloud Peak. After traversing the ridge for about half a mile, we will arrive at Sunshine Peak. We then return on the same route, witnessing equally awe-inspiring scenery from the opposite direction. Upon reaching camp we load in our vehicles and return to Durango with a nice pit stop in Silverton. This is truly an awesome adventure!
