Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. – Lao Tzu
This is an outstanding Cedar Mesa Utah trek that begins at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station. The trail first passes through piñon-juniper forest on the sagebrush flats where wilderness surrounds you. As we leave the mesa top and head into Grand Gulch, the canyon deepens. For the next few days we will remain immersed in the wild majesty of the canyon, exploring the ruins, cliff dwellings, and rock art forged long ago by the Ancestral Puebloan people. We’ll pass such allures as Turkey Pen Ruin, Stimper Arch, a split-level ruin, Coyote Canyon, The Thumb, and Sheik’s Canyon.
At Bullet Junction Spring we head west. Totem Pole, Dripping Canyon, Cow Tank Canyon, and others are waiting for you to discover their secrets. Just before rising out of the Grand Gulch–Polly’s Canyon junction, we’ll admire a natural arch. This trek will exit Grand Gulch on Polly’s Pasture where you will have a gentle ascent to the Government Trail trailhead. Here your transportation will be waiting to return you to Durango.
